Agriculture is becoming more diversified in Florida.  The issues with HLB (Greening) in the citrus community has resulted in some growers looking at other alternatives for use of their land and irrigation facilities.

Bamboo is showing some interest lately.  The Italian company has been able to interest some growers in Polk County resulting in some new plantings.  They have indicated to growers that our Florida climate is conducive to good growth.  A recent note indicated that about 250 acres had been planted in Florida.  I have spoken with some growers that have concerns about the company’s 10 year crop buy back, the expense of the initial planting and future processing of the crop.  We will see!  Interesting to me so will just watch.

There seems to be suggestions that new technology should be assumed by some of our older farmers but some do not realize that learning this and utilizing this can be hard for the older generation.  Guess the “kids” will have to teach them but in the meantime, is Dad paying the bills?

Polk County has been fortunate in obtaining funds for our highway improvements.  The inconvenience we endure during the construction process will hopefully provide more  safety and convenience when finished.

I am watching the progress of the Polk Parkway as I have a property listed on US 27 just South of Cypress Gardens Rd. (Hwy. 540) that will be involved as well as an additional property to the South on Highway 60.  If this project goes forward, it should provide some relief to the extensive traffic on US 27 and Highway 60.

We are seeing more inquiries about industrial and commercial land for sale and I am fortunate that I have 103 acres on Hwy. 17 just South of the City limits of Bartow.  This acreage has been divided into 3 parcels.   Good highway exposure and frontage and in an area that an industrial operation should not have an impact on residential properties in the area.

Fishing season is here and a property at Port Hatchineha would be great for that fisherman or the individual who likes to explore waterways.  You can go from Port Hatchineha to Kissimmee or go South clear to the ocean.  Can also go to the fish camps on Lake Kissimmee.  Great house with mother-in-law suite or rental unit in addition to the 2BR, 2 bath.

Real estate can be interesting and I guess that is why I have continued to enjoy it since 1978.
